January is Thyroid Awareness Month, an opportunity to recognize the various health conditions associated with thyroid dysfunction and the importance of thyroid wellness. This small gland in the neck regulates metabolism, energy levels, and overall well-being. Optimal thyroid health management goes beyond conventional medicine - many are exploring diet, plant medicine and cannabis as complementary therapies.

Understanding the Thyroid Gland

The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate vital bodily functions, including heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and weight. When the thyroid malfunctions, it can lead to health issues such as:

  • Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid): Affects about 4.6% of the U.S. population, leading to symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, and depression.

  • Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid): Occurs in about 1.2% of the population and can cause anxiety, weight loss, and palpitations.

  • Hashimoto's Disease (also known as Hashimoto's Thyroiditis): An autoimmune disease affecting 1-2% of the U.S. population, in which the immune system attacks the thyroid hormone producing cells, usually leading to hypothyroidism.

Common symptoms of thyroid dysfunction include fatigue, mood changes, hair loss, and sensitivity to temperature.

Plant Medicine in Thyroid Health

Here are some traditional herbal remedies known to support thyroid health:

Seaweed

Seaweed, especially types rich in iodine, can help to maintain healthy thyroid function. Iodine is necessary for producing thyroid hormones. For instance, one study found that supplementing with iodine can improve thyroid hormone levels in individuals with an underactive thyroid. Those with iodine deficiency might experience fatigue, weakness, and mood disturbances, often linked to hypothyroidism. Table salt is iodized to ensure adequate iodine consumption. Excessive iodine intake can actually contribute to Hashimoto's Disease, so it is important to work with your health care team to determine deficiencies and supplementary dosages.

Guggul

Guggul, derived from the resin of the Commiphora mukul tree, is a staple in Ayurvedic medicine. Research has suggested that guggul may stimulate thyroid function. A study noted that individuals taking guggul showed significant improvements in thyroid hormone levels after eight weeks of treatment.

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb recognized for its stress-reducing properties. As stress can negatively affect thyroid function, ashwagandha may promote hormonal balance. One study indicated that individuals taking ashwagandha had a 40% increase in thyroid hormone production, leading to improved symptoms for those with hypothyroidism.

Incorporating these plant medicines into a holistic approach may offer support for individuals dealing with thyroid dysfunction.

The Role of Cannabis in Supporting Thyroid Health

Cannabinoids interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system - the "master regulatory system" - which ensures homeostasis, or balance, of all of the other body systems.

Anti-inflammatory Properties

One of cannabis's significant benefits is its anti-inflammatory effects. Autoimmune thyroid disorders, such as Hashimoto's, are exacerbated by inflammation. Studies show that regular use of cannabis can reduce markers of inflammation, alleviating discomfort and improving overall wellness.

Stress Management

We know that stress negatively impacts wellness, including thyroid health. By reducing anxiety and promoting relaxation, cannabis can be used to improve stress management and overall wellness. Many individuals with thyroid disorders report feeling more centered and calm when using cannabis products, enabling them to better manage the emotional and psychological aspects of their conditions.

Hormonal Balance

Emerging studies suggest that cannabinoids may also support overall hormonal balance. Research on cannabis’s direct effect on thyroid hormones is still growing - it is always exciting to watch the field of cannabinoid science emerge!

As more people explore cannabis as a therapeutic option it is important to remember to consult healthcare providers knowledgeable about its use for thyroid health. They can guide you on how cannabis fits with other treatments.
